Renowned for his expertise in international dispute resolution and appellate work, Peter B. “Bo” Rutledge combines extensive academic knowledge with practical legal experience to address complex global legal issues. He currently serves as a faculty member and Dean of the University of Georgia School of Law.
Bo’s academic career includes a notable tenure as the Dean of the University of Georgia School of Law, where he led the institution through a period of significant growth and innovation. Under his leadership, the law school set records for rankings and fundraising, expanded student financial aid access, and was consistently recognized as one of the nation’s top values in legal education. Before his appointment as dean, Bo was the Associate Dean for Faculty Development, where he collaborated closely with the law school’s faculty, particularly its untenured professors, to advance and support scholarly and research initiatives. Ahead of his time at UGA, Bo served as a faculty member at the Catholic University Law School as well as a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of Vienna Law School (Austria).
Prior to his academic roles, Bo worked in private practice, where he specialized in international dispute resolution and Supreme Court matters, managing high-stakes cases and providing strategic counsel on intricate legal issues, including cases in Austria. His work included drafting briefs, motions, and pleadings in the Supreme Court, as well as lower court litigation, and advising clients in German and English in the ICC and other arbitrations. Additionally, he served as a judicial clerk at the U.S. Supreme Court for Justice Clarence Thomas and at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit for Chief Judge J. Harvie Wilkinson III.
Bo serves as an arbitrator with several international organizations, has testified before Congress on arbitration legislation, and regularly speaks on topics related to international dispute resolution and the Supreme Court. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, American Law Institute, Atlanta International Arbitration Society, and the Society for the Rule of Law.
An accomplished scholar, Bo is the author of Arbitration and the Constitution and co-author, with Gary Born, of International Civil Litigation in United States Courts. His research has been published by prestigious academic presses, including Yale University Press, Oxford University Press, and Cambridge University Press. His articles have appeared in leading journals such as The University of Chicago Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, and the Journal of International Arbitration.
