OSHA Investigates BioLab’s Recent Chemical Fire And Its Impact On Employee Health And Safety

OSHA has opened an on-site investigation into the BioLab chemical fire that occurred on September 29, 2024, raising concerns about employee safety during the cleanup process. Workers involved in past cleanups of hazardous materials, such as oil and ash spills, have reported health impacts from prolonged exposure to these substances. OSHA has exposure limits for how much and how long a worker can be exposed to certain chemicals. These limits are meant to protect the most vulnerable person in a workplace, a pregnant person, and are based on "current scientific consensus of when is something safe and when is something harmful," said Stephen McCullers, a partner at Morris, Manning and Martin specializing in environmental remediation and compliance.
