On Wednesday, October 11, 2023, Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP held its third annual Cheers Event, raising $25,095 for Goodwill of Greater Washington (Goodwill)!
More than 150 community leaders, social influencers, corporate executives, and Goodwill shoppers and donors attended the event, taking place at MMM’s new office location in Dupont Circle in downtown D.C.
Through a combination of individual giving, a silent auction, raffle, and other fun fundraising activities, the event raised a total of $25,095, a new record for MMM’s Washington, D.C., office’s Cheers event!
“Cheers serves as an excellent opportunity for our firm to spotlight community organizations and nonprofits, and it brings me great pride and joy that our record-setting 2023 event further advanced the mission of Goodwill of Greater Washington,” said Betsy Karmin, partner in MMM’s Real Estate practice group, and previously a member of the Board of Directors for Goodwill of Greater Washington.
“We couldn’t be more grateful for the tremendous support of Betsy Karmin and the team at Morris, Manning, & Martin!” said Catherine Meloy, President & CEO of Goodwill of Greater Washington. “Not only did they break a Cheers fundraising record with Goodwill as the beneficiary, but they also provided a fun and engaging opportunity to share the good work that Goodwill does for our community with a generous and influential group of community leaders.”
The evening’s theme was focused on People, Planet, and Prosperity, the three pillars of social sustainability. Every dollar raised will have a direct and measurable impact on the Goodwill mission.
People: Goodwill of Greater Washington is an employer of more than 1,000 people, many of whom identify as a person with a differing ability or a person with a disadvantage. Goodwill is proud to walk alongside each of these individuals and provide coaching and training to help them achieve greater levels of success and self-sufficiency. Their important work at Goodwill helps to not only fulfill the important goal of repurposing the valuable donations the charitable organization receives, but it also provides individuals who are in need of a “hand-up”, the opportunity to learn important skills for their future careers, whether it is at Goodwill or beyond.
Planet: Goodwill receives more than 49 million pounds of donations each year, bringing new purpose to these items while also keeping them out of local landfills. In an effort to do even more with the items that cannot be sold in its nonprofit retail stores because they are broken or soiled, and with your generous support, Goodwill will embark on an effort to pulverize the glass items that are unsold, turning the glass into sand that can be used for construction projects; and shredding plastic that can be repurposed into plastic molds and other materials.
Prosperity: The skills and experience gained at Goodwill can transform lives for generations to come. At the Goodwill Excel Center, more than 400 adults each year earn the credits toward achieving their high school diploma along with industry-recognized credentials to help them in their new careers or college. People like Mr. Michael Jeffery, who was living under a bridge yet rose to become his class valedictorian, have truly transformed their lives at the Goodwill Excel Center through hope, dedication, and hard work.
