ATLANTA – January 16, 2024 – Associate Ashley Klein was featured in America Bar Association’s Landslide Magazine to discuss copyright law in the music industry.
Klein took a deep dive on the pop music icon, Taylor Swift and her decision to rerecord her album collection to highlight copyright law and contracts with record labels – two issues many artists face in the industry. Taylor Swift notably began rerecording her music after parting ways with Big Machine Records in 2018. The strategic move gave Swift the ability to own both aspects of her music – the music composition and the copyright of the master recording.
She explains that copyright ownership is determined and dictated by the contract signed with the record label. Klein also explains the aftermath from Swift’s rerecorded music and how it has resulted in many record labels extending the wait time for artists to rerecord and release music to 10 to 30 years.
