Atlanta (February 6, 2018) – Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP has chosen Horizons Atlanta, a regional network of summer learning programs for economically disadvantaged children, as its 2018 nonprofit partner.
Each year, MMMPact, the law firm’s corporate social responsibility program, picks one of the many nonprofit organizations the firm supports, to be its primary MMMPact Partner for that year.
Horizons Atlanta works to close the “opportunity gap” that low-income children face, by delivering high quality academic programs in an engaging summer learning environment. It also fights the “summer slide,” in which children lose the academic progress they made during the previous school year. Horizons Atlanta’s programs help children gain two to three months of growth in reading and math while also focusing on life skills, STEAM and enrichment activities. Students go on field trips, eat healthy meals and even learn to swim.
The nonprofit, which is part of a national network of programs located on independent school and college campuses, expects to serve 825 students at nine program sites in metro Atlanta this year.
Morris, Manning & Martin Managing Partner Louise Wells is a strong advocate for Horizons Atlanta. She first became involved through Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School (HIES) in 1999. She and her children volunteered, and she joined the board two years later. She also sponsors a student as a member of the 100% Club, the organization’s premier donor giving circle.
“Under her leadership, both the Horizons HIES program and our regional organization has flourished, expanding to serve a significant number of students and helping to raise awareness about the importance of summer learning in closing the opportunity gap,” said Mary-Kate Starkel, Horizon Atlanta’s Associate Director of External Affairs.
The law firm launched its 2018 partnership with Horizons Atlanta at a kick-off event Jan. 31 at MMM’s Buckhead office.
“The partnership is by no means exclusive, but the firm provides extra support for their MMMPact Partner throughout the year by raising funds, providing pro bono services, volunteering and raising awareness of the nonprofit’s mission,” said MMMPact Chair Christina Graham.
Previous MMMPact Partners include Ahimsa House, Open Doors, Kate’sClub, CURE Childhood Cancer and Reach for Excellence.
