Georgia Judges Face Little Opposition In May Elections

04.24.2024

As the May judicial elections approach in Georgia, nearly 96% of superior court judges are running unopposed. MMM Litigation Partners Doug Hance and Eric Larson spoke with the AJC about why this lack of opposition in judicial elections is the norm in Georgia.

Hance explains that almost all Georgia judicial elections are nonpartisan, making it difficult for candidates to distinguish themselves. According to Hance, the nonpartisan nature of these elections makes it “harder to communicate a clear message that’s going to grab the voters’ attention.” Larson goes on to explain that most voters have limited awareness of how judges have previously handled cases; therefore, “voters probably haven’t formed any opinion on the candidates, in which case they typically just default to the incumbent.”
