Atlanta (June 17, 2020) – The Alumni Association of the Duke University School of Law has chosen Morris, Manning & Martin’s John Yates as a recipient of the 2020 Charles S. Rhyne Award for Professional Achievement. The Law Alumni Association (LAA) presents the award annually to a graduate whose career exemplifies the highest standards of professionalism, personal integrity and commitment to education or community service.
“It is a great tribute to you that the LAA chose you to receive this award, and we are honored to add your name to the distinguished list of predecessors,” Law School Dean Kerry Abrams said in a congratulatory letter.
The letter stated that the nominating committee praised Yates for pioneering the fields of technology, e-commerce and internet law – and for his significant civic involvement.
“The committee noted that you have achieved the highest level of professional success not only at Morris, Manning & Martin, LLP where you lead the Technology Group, but also across the industry as a co-founder of several non-profit tech associations. In addition to your impressive professional accomplishments, you also dedicate countless hours supporting your community through board service with the Woodruff Arts Center, Metro YMCA of Atlanta, CURE Childhood Cancer, and the Duke Law Board of Visitors.”
The award commemorates the life and career of the late Charles S. Rhyne, a Duke Law alum who was president of the American Bar Association, special counsel to President Eisenhower and appointed as U.N. High Commissioner on Refugees. Rhyne argued significant cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, pushed for integration and encouraged developing the field of international law to promote world peace.
