Atlanta (October 4, 2022) - The states often hold the key to successful brownfield redevelopment, MMM Chairman Gerald Pouncey told a U.S. Senate Committee recently. The Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works invited Pouncey to speak about reauthorizing the federal program that helps turn brownfields – areas impacted by prior industrial use – into mixed-use redevelopments, parks, housing and more. The hearing, and Pouncey’s testimony, prompted news coverage from several different angles. (Note: Some media outlets require subscriptions.)
InsideEPA focused on Pouncey’s assertion that state programs can often offer developers a chance to recoup cleanup costs through tax concessions while offering important liability protections. This, he says, helps many projects move forward that otherwise might not. See that article here.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution emphasized Pouncey’s role in brownfield cleanups in The Jolt political newsletter, adding that the state has more than 1,300 brownfield sites. Click here and scroll down for that.
Route 50, an outlet that describes itself as connecting state and local government leaders, noted that support for the brownfield program is popular with both Republicans and Democrats.
The E&E Daily focused on the lawmakers’ for brownfield redevelopments to do more for rural and underserved communities.
