Atlanta (January 25, 2017) – Helping families impacted by domestic abuse is the 2017 goal for Morris, Manning & Martin’s MMMPact committee. Every year MMMPact – the law firm’s social responsibility outreach – embraces a different nonprofit organization. This year’s nonprofit partner is Ahimsa House, which helps domestic abuse victims and their pets escape violence.
“Many victims stay in abusive situations out of dedication to their pets,” says MMMPact Committee Chair Christina Graham. “Often the first signs of impending abuse are demonstrated through acts of animal cruelty, with the animals being used as a form of ransom to keep the victims compliant. Ahimsa House is one of the only organizations of its kind in the U.S., and the only one in Georgia, that helps victims of domestic abuse to find shelter for themselves, their children and their animals.”
The nonprofit, which was founded by a survivor of domestic violence, finds temporary homes for pets for up to 60 days. “Nobody should have to choose between their safety and a beloved pet,” said Ahimsa House Executive Director Myra Rasnick. “We also go to court with victims to get protective orders and provide follow-up care. We are very excited to engage with the firm and get the word out about what we do.”
MMMPact will also partner with a number of related organizations including the Drake House, which helps women and their children stay together and regain balance in their lives. Unlike other shelters, it allows boys over age 12 to stay with their mothers and sisters instead of going into male-only shelters or foster care.
The partnership with MMMPact means that throughout the year, the law firm will hold fundraisers, offer volunteer opportunities, and provide much-needed support to Ahimsa House. The effort officially got underway with a kick-off event at the firm’s Buckhead office Jan. 24.
Previous MMMPact Partners include Open Doors, Kate’s Club, CURE Childhood Cancer and Reach for Excellence.
