The Annual Stonewall Bar Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 6 p.m. at the Fox Theater in Atlanta. The Stonewall Bar Association of Georgia, Inc. ("SBA"). SBA is a professional association of attorneys, judges, law students, paralegals and other legal professionals who support the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, and who oppose discrimination based upon sexual orientation or gender identity.
We are honored to have Mary Bonauto as our guest speaker. Ms. Bonauto, the Civil Rights Project Director for Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD), argued the landmark Obergefell v. Hodges case before the U.S. Supreme Court. The decision held that the fundamental right to marry is guaranteed to same-sex couples.
We will also honor the following awards recipients:
- Merritt McAlister, Lori Surmay and James Outman for their amicus briefing on the E.L. v. V.L. case in the U.S. Supreme Court, which struck down an Alabama Supreme Court case refusing to recognize adoptions by same sex couples. (The Court was construing Georgia law.)
- Georgia’s Counsel of Probate Court Judges for ensuring that same-sex marriages proceeded without issue.
- Jeff Cleghorn for his longtime commitment to the SBA community.
In addition to inviting lawyers and various elected officials, we invite approximately 400 judges from throughout the state. This is a very exciting, rewarding and special event for the LGBT community which SBA takes great pride and commitment in planning and conducting every year.
